[Audio]

Crowd cheering.

Next, we zoom in to panning aerial footage of cars lined up on the Shell Eco-marathon race track, followed by a close-up of the start lights as they change from red to green. We see a rapid series of aerial shots of Shell Eco-marathon vehicles on the track. We transition to talking head footage of Norman Koch, seen against the background of the racetrack. Next, we see a group shot of the cheering teams standing behind their parked Eco-marathon vehicles, flying their respective countries’ flags. We see a driver in close-up in his cockpit, pulling his helmet’s visor down in readiness to race. Medium angle footage shows a team surrounding their vehicle as they work on it. We see close-up footage of a spinning wheel, team members working in the background.

A rich history of innovation and inspiration

The competition dates back to 1939, when Bob Greenshields, Shell’s Research Director, made a friendly wager with his colleagues to see who could get the best fuel economy from road cars adapted to maximise energy efficiency. Bob achieved 49 MPG, setting a record and creating a legacy that has lasted the distance.

Shell Eco-marathon officially launched in 1985, when 25 teams gathered in France to pit their wooden vehicles against one another in a format that laid the foundations for the competition we now know and love.

The track competition has come a long way since then and today’s teams can choose from an array of energy options, from battery electric to hydrogen fuel cell, using different materials, from advanced carbon fibre to bamboo. In 2023, Regional Competitions are back and will once again allow teams to compete against a wider range of participants. The World Championships series, local events and the Autonomous Competitions will provide even more chances for STEM students to test their skills

The programme continues to evolve, but one thing that hasn’t changed is our commitment to provide STEM students with a platform to collaborate and learn, to help shape a lower carbon world.

To date, more than 100,000 students from hundreds of universities in over 60 countries have participated and the legacy of Shell Eco-marathon is clear to see. Meet the teams from previous seasons and read their inspirational stories with real-world impact on the STEM global community.
