A video inset appears centred against a turquoise background, framed by white lines and yellow dots. The words Pitch the Future, #MakeTheFuture #ShellEcoMarathon appear underneath the video. This background stays throughout the video. The video shows Colin Furze in his workshop. He is wearing a short-sleeved shirt and tie, and tools are visible on the walls and workbenches behind him. He speaks enthusiastically.

Colin Furze

Wow, we really did see it all in Pitch the Future, from apps to clever cars, there was a whole host of brilliant ideas and teams battling it out.

[Animated sequence]

Yellow and white lines speed across the turquoise background. Words appear in white.

[Text displays]

132 teams.

Colin Furze

It started with 132 teams.

Five game changing ideas.

Colin Furze

It ended with five game-changing ideas.

A split screen appears with four panels. A smaller fifth panel overlays them in the centre. The panels show previews of each of the five winning ideas. In the four larger panels are seen an animated driver's view of a car, a PowerPoint slide with a diagram, geese flying in a V formation, and an industrial scene with tall cranes against a sunset. The small panel in the centre shows a small white car. These pictures are replaced by representatives of the winning teams. They smile and wave.

Colin Furze

Let's get into the first of them.

Decarbonising the Home

[Text displays]

Decarbonising the Home with Shell Energy

Colin Furze

E4 UFSC from Brazil took top prize in the Decarbonising the Home Challenge.

A large central panel displays a video montage. Colin is shown in a small inset in the upper right corner. An industrial scene showing a large crane silhouetted against a sunset, as it slowly gets darker. A shot looking up towards the sun through tall pine trees. An aerial shot of a loading dock, with several trucks at loading bays, arriving and leaving. An engineer in a high-visibility vest stands inside a partially completed building, flipping through blueprints.

Colin Furze

They thought about the environmental impact of construction. Where do the materials come from? How is everything put together? How much more efficient can construction be, if managed more effectively?

A view of the home page of a website, showing a stylised drawing of houses and commercial buildings. A large button labelled Let's Build dominates the page. Another page appears, showing a location selection dropdown box. Another page appears showing a list of possible construction materials for Sao Paulo. The list scrolls.

Colin Furze

Could we use less natural resources? Well, yeah, it could be possible, based on a new website the team proposed.

Colin in his workshop.

[Text displays]

The clever part

Colin Furze

Select what you're building, and work out the most efficient way to construct, from sourcing materials, to the transportation, and everything else in between.

The website reappears, showing a page with the text, you selected aggregates. Scrolling down, we see a diagram showing different aspects of aggregates.

Colin Furze

Build the home of your dreams, and do it in the most efficient way. Win-win.

Tracking and Reducing CO2 Emissions

Colin in his workshop.

[Text displays]

Tracking and Reducing CO2 Emissions with Microsoft.

Colin Furze

Alamat UP from the Philippines won the Tracking and Reducing CO2 Emissions challenge.

Video montage with inset window showing Colin. Driver's point of view of a stylised car, with a fuel gauge visible on the windscreen. A green leaf appears below the fuel gauge.

Colin Furze

They thought, how can we save fuel while reducing CO2 emissions?

Stylised drawing of a city street lined with tall buildings, seen from above. A stylised mobile phone is beside the drawing of the city.

Colin Furze

Well, with their new Cero app, of course.

Colin in his workshop.

[Text displays]

The smart bit

Colin Furze

It cleverly maps out the most efficient route, and also provides fuel saving tips for driving.

A stylised mobile phone to the right, with a closeup of its screen showing driving statistics to the left.

Colin Furze

So users can save money and minimize emissions, too. Brilliant.

Decarbonising Road Freight

Colin in his workshop.

[Text displays]

Decarbonising road freight with Shell Lubricants.

Colin Furze

DTU Supermileage from India were victorious in the Decarbonising Road Freight challenge.

A series of slides with technical drawings showing details of onboard carbon capturing and utilisation.

Colin Furze

They thought they could make deliveries more eco-friendly through a combination of three core features.

A series of slides with technical drawings explaining carbon capture from exhaust.

Colin Furze

Optimising the supply chain, reducing emissions from vehicles and onboard carbon capture from exhaust.

Colin in his workshop.

[Text displays]

The magic moment.

Colin Furze

Focusing on just one of these, their idea is to use silica to capture CO2 from the exhaust system. Inspiring. Everyone doing their own carbon capture.

Electric Vehicle Battery Charging

Colin in his workshop.

[Text displays]

Electric Vehicle Battery Charging with Shell Recharge.

Colin Furze

For electric mobility, Ecocar Unicamp from Brazil claimed top spot.

Video montage plays with a small inset showing Colin in the top right corner. A stylised drawing of a person's head and shoulders is surrounded by symbols representing time, CO2 and efficient routing.

Colin Furze

Their unique approach tackled how to make batteries work to their best efficiency, and give drivers the most stress-free journey.

A slide titled Ecotrip shows, with a stylised road. Over the road, icons showing cars at an electric charging station, a lightning bolt, and a power plant are superimposed. These are replaced by the words, we are ready, let's go, with yes and no buttons beneath.

Colin Furze

The new Ecotrip app is about making travel as efficient as possible.

Colin in his workshop.

[Text displays]

The bright spark.

Colin Furze

It calculates temperature and traffic density and works out the best route.

Stylised route markers with the words from Rio de Janeiro to Toronto, then replaced by a screen reading, we arrived, about the sustainability of the trip, followed by a list of statistics about the trip. The screen scrolls to show the data.

Colin Furze

And there we are, range anxiety gone.

Colin's Choice Awards

Colin in his workshop. He is now wearing a dark suit jacket, and a glitterball is hanging from the ceiling behind him.

[Text displays]

Colin's Choice Awards with Colin Furze.

Colin Furze

Ah, but we're not done yet, nope. There is time for one more award. Colin Furze's Choice award.

Colin laughs and preens his tie. He then reappears in his workshop without the suit jacket and glitterball.

[Text displays]

Nature's answer to travel

Colin Furze

AlecTED from Turkey took the Colin Furze Choice award for the most innovative idea.

Video montage plays. A dense forest is seen from above. A flock of geese flying in a V formation.

Colin Furze

They turned to the natural world for inspiration, looking at the V-shaped pattern flying of birds.

Seven cars traveling on a three-lane road in a formation. All the cars are white except the lead car, which is red. The cars reshuffle and the red car swaps with one of the white cars which takes over the lead.

Colin Furze

They took this idea and applied it to how we drive in traffic, reducing the drag and emissions.

A sphere representing a global energy grid spins in the background. In the foreground, three mobile phone screens are shown, one with a login page for Echelon, one showing a small map and some menu options, and the third showing a route map with directions. Cut to a driver's view of a road ahead, which shows an enhanced display highlighting other vehicles and features of the road.

Colin Furze

Add in a new app called Echelon, where data and other technology tell cars where to drive to create these V-formations, creating the most efficient drive.

Colin in his workshop.

Colin Furze

It will be hard to do in practice, but you never know, this is where the future could be.

Conclusion

Colin in his workshop, the camera zooms in for a closeup.

Colin Furze

What a fabulous Pitch the Future, all the entries, the creativity, the new technologies, how to get people thinking about what they can do to help in the energy transition. Really well done to all the teams, your passion, your dedication, creativity and delivery really shone through.

I liked the way all the teams looked at this in different ways, and in terms of the winning idea, starting from the building and redefining how our construction industry works could be a major opportunity.

Hey, Colin. Yeah, a lot of the entries were mind-blowing. I'm really, really proud of these young teams' ingenious thinking. The innovations, the progressive thinking, how they think of the entire ecosystem. But also, the creativity with which they presented their entries, their presentations. Each of the teams really understood the humanity of the people, the people that a lot of these technologies, a lot of these innovations are supposed to serve. Full marks on that one as well.

Mark Andrews

We want to thank all of the teams for entering this challenge. At Adobe, digital literacy is the power to use digital tools to solve problems, to create innovative projects, and enhance communications. It's my pleasure to announce the winners of the Digital Literacy Awards with Adobe. In third place, we have Garuda UNY Eco from Indonesia.

Footage of the Garuda pitch is shown. A live narrator appears on screen next to a stylised small red car with a driver leaning out of the window. Symbols indicating wireless connectivity surround the car. The car is replaced by text, driver's suggest warning. The live narrator flashes from the right to the left of the screen, and a small cartoon car carrying overhead luggage appears next to a large phone screen displaying the CO2 SDA app. Speech bubbles are used to call out items on the phone display. The car and phone screen are replaced by an animated hand holding a pen, which draws a graph showing fuel consumption.

Mark Andrews

The Garuda Team's use of Illustrator to visualise system flows, XD to develop an app prototype, culminating with some impressive video production that utilise Premiere and After Effects to construct an engaging and polished pitch, which was super-impressive.

In second place, Galway Energy Efficient Car from Ireland.

Footage is shown from Galway Energy Efficient Car's pitch. A driver's view showing a phone in a holder, with the Bluetooth symbol next to it. An electronic device with a circuit board appears underneath the Bluetooth symbol. Cut to a hand holding a phone, which displays screens from the app displaying maps and a contact list. Cut to a driver's view showing a phone in a holder displaying the app.

Mark Andrews

Using Adobe XD to design and prototype their app, and then using Premiere to craft an evocative and powerful video presentation that used both stock and self-shot footage. This was coupled with a strong narrative and structure to communicate the problem and showcase their solution.

Closeup of Mark Andrews.

In first place, DJS Miles from India.

Footage from the DJS Miles pitch is shown. An animated avatar narrator is at the bottom left of the screen. A house with cutaway to show a family in their living room is behind the avatar. On the right side of the screen are symbols for CO2 and radiation. The house and symbols is replaced by a stylised street scene of a town centre area, showing shopfronts and a sidewalk café. Traffic is passing in front of the buildings. The avatar gestures to different areas of the scene.

Mark Andrews

The DJS submission thoughtfully used motion graphics and avatar narration combined with well-crafted scripts that communicated the challenge and solution in a clear way.

We were universally impressed by all of the submissions. Each submission brought something different and highly original.

You know, Colin, I believe that this is what we need to keep on doing. I think Pitch the Future is now going to be a very important, if not a pillar, of the entire Shell Eco-Marathon ecosystem. Maybe we can also ask the students, what would they love to crack, in terms of solving today's energy problems or today's energy opportunities. I look forward to the 2021 edition of the Shell Eco-Marathon Pitch the Future. Watch this space.

Now then, I was looking for an idea which was completely unexpected, some real out of the box thinking. The winning team, which I've chosen, is, drum roll, AlecTED from Turkey.

Colin Furze

What they had done, I thought was amazing. They'd looked up at the sky, saw how birds fly in a V-shaped formation, and they do this for efficiency. The first bird takes all the aero-impact, and then the ones behind it have a little bit of an easier job. They thought, we should do that when we're driving our cars. We should have the most aerodynamic car at the front, and then it tails off in different range, right up to a big boxy thing at the back. To apply what you're seeing in the sky, and put that down into traffic, that's really good thinking, that is. That is why you get the Colin Furze choice award.

But you don't just get it with me saying it. Oh, no. I've made you a special trophy. Check that out. That is going to be coming in the post all the way to you. Thank you very much. Now, back to Norman.

But as you all know, this isn't the end. We still have a range of virtual activities over the next six months. We will see which team becomes the new virtually global champion, and hopefully, we'll also see many of you back on the track in the summer of next year. It fills me with great pride that we have been able to continue learning together and even holding competitions during these challenging times. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the teams for their ongoing passion and dedication to the program. Let me wish everyone a happy new year, and I'm looking forward to seeing you all very soon.
