Title: Spirit of Shell Eco-marathon Awards 2020

Duration: 30:15 minutes

Description: Virtual Winners Ceremony of the Spirit of Shell Eco-marathon Awards.

[Audio]

The sound of an indistinguishable TV show is coming from the TV.

Opening segment featuring Norman Koch seated in his living room watching TV.

[Text displays]

#ShellEcoMarathon #MakeTheFuture

This alternating text appears in the top right-hand corner throughout the video.

[Audio]

Sound of TV channel changing when Norman presses his TV remote control.

Norman Koch:

No!

As Norman searches through the TV channels using his remote control, he finally sees the start of something he thinks he wants to keep watching.

Norman Koch:

Oh, what's this?

[Music]

Rousing orchestral music score begins, over which booms an epic voiceover.

The voiceover appears over footage that starts with a view of a revolving Planet Earth from space. We begin to push into the United Kingdom and then a landscape of houses seen from overhead is revealed. We are then looking directly down onto the rooftops, and finally descend into the garden of one of the houses.

Voiceover:

And now, coming to you from across the globe, direct from his living room, at a top secret location somewhere in the UK, we are proud to introduce your host: The man, the myth, the legend: It's Norman Koch!

[Audio]

The end of the voiceover is met with sustained cheering and applause.

Norman originally looks surprised when he hears himself being introduced by the voiceover, but then we see he is very much in on the joke.

[Audio]

Norman clicks fingers.

Norman clicks his fingers and this suddenly makes him change into his tuxedo and bow tie.

Norman:

When unexpected things happen, you just have to be ready! Welcome to the Spirit of Shell Eco-marathon Awards. Roll the titles, please!

[Animated sequence]

We zoom into a graphic title saying 'Spirit of Shell Eco-marathon', where the dot above the first 'i' in 'Spirit' comprises a heart symbol, which is beating. Alongside the title, there are four icons that represent the key criteria of the award: Perseverance, Compassion, Empathy, Innovation.

We return to Norman, seated in his living room, dressed in his tuxedo and bow tie.

[Text displays]

Norman Koch Shell Eco-marathon Global General Manager

Norman:

Yes, it has been a challenging year for all of us involved in Shell Eco-marathon! A global pandemic stopped your efforts on the track, but it hasn't stopped you from achieving great feats of perseverance, compassion, empathy and innovation.

[Animated sequence]

As Norman says the words that represent the four judging criteria of the award, these animate full screen - along with accompanying icons to represent each: PERSEVERANCE, COMPASSION, EMPATHY, INNOVATION.

Norman:

These values are the Spirit of Shell Eco-marathon, and today I'm welcoming you into my home, along with some very special guests from all around the world, to celebrate our nine shortlisted nominees from which three teams will be winning great cash prizes....

[Animated sequence]

Details of prize money to be awarded for each of the three regional winners animates full screen: EUROPE €2,500, ASIA $3,000 USD, AMERICAS $3,000 USD.

Norman:

... and some special Nissan e.dams Formula E merchandise. And, to get our ceremony started, I'm joined by someone who has a very special connection with Shell Eco-marathon. It's my colleague, Harry Brekelmans.

[Split screen footage]

We see Norman (left of screen] and Harry Brekelmans [right of screen]. Harry Brekelmans appears full screen once he begins his message.

Harry Brekelmans Shell Projects and Technology Director

Harry Brekelmans:

Hi Norman. It's great to be with you as we celebrate this prestigious Spirit of Shell Eco-marathon Award. I know how much this means to all of the nominees, as I’ve been part of the Shell Eco-marathon throughout my career and, as a result, I understand what it means to overcome adversity, to think creatively and achieve great things against the odds.

[Animated sequence]

A 9-window full screen montage of images from our shortlisted teams appears.

Harry Brekelmans (continues):

I’m so inspired by the entries that I’ve seen, and the impact the students of the Shell Eco-marathon continue to have. As an engineer myself, it’s fantastic to see a new generation of scientists and engineers constantly innovating in the future of energy and mobility and the way in which you apply yourselves and your skills. Huge good luck to all the teams

and congratulations to all of you for your amazing efforts. Back to you Norman.

[Split screen footage]

We see Norman (left of screen] and Harry Brekelmans [right of screen]. Norman appears full screen when Harry ends his message.

Norman:

Thanks Harry - this years' nominees really do have some inspirational stories to share with us all. Now, while Shell Eco-marathon hasn't been on track this year, we welcome another special guest who has had his best season yet. From Nissan e.dams Formula E Team, it's Oliver Rowland.

[Video footage}

We see a video montage of footage related to Oliver Rowland: A slow-motion close-up of his hand wearing a driver's glove, followed by a slow motion shot of Oliver Rowland in his driver's overalls backlit by the sunshine.

[Split screen footage]

We see Norman (left of screen] and Oliver Rowland [right of screen]. Oliver Rowland appears full screen.

Oliver Rowland:

Hey Norman, hey everybody. It's impressive how the nominees have proven their adaptability as a team to overcome adversity, work together to give back to others, or demonstrated some creative thinking whilst persevering against the odds.

[Video footage}

We see a video montage of footage related to Oliver Rowland: A slow-motion side-shot close-up of his face as he appears to look towards the race track, a mid-shot of Oliver Rowland wearing his overalls in front of a distant stadium grandstand, a shot following a Nissan e.dams Formula E car from just behind as it drives around the race track, a shot filmed looking back at the same car as it drives around the track, and a final shot following the car from behind again.

Oliver Rowland:

Good luck everybody from me and everybody here at Nissan. Back to you, Norman.

[Split screen footage]

We see Norman (left of screen] and Oliver Rowland [right of screen]. Norman appears full screen, once Oliver Rowland has handed back to him.

Norman:

Thanks Oliver, and well done to you for your team's own success story, this season.

Now, you might wonder how we got to the final nine nominees. To enter the competition, Shell Eco-marathon teams either nominated themselves or another team. The judges assessed over 50 of your nominations and shortlisted 3 teams from each region.

[Animated sequence]

During the above sequence, a 9-window full screen montage of individual team members from our shortlisted teams appears. This then animates into full screen text to mirror the facts that Norman is telling us about: '51 Nominations', followed by '3 shortlisted teams per region'.

Norman:

And here to tell us why teams were shortlisted and who the winners are, we are joined by our prestigious panel of award announcers.

[Animated sequence and 3-screen footage]

The graphic sting radiates out from the screen to reveal footage of our three award announcers, each in one of three windows. From left to right, these are: Carlos Maurer, Gretchen Watkins, Frans Everts.

Norman:

More from them shortly. Plus, of course, we have our Shell Eco-marathon teams joining us from all around the world.

[Animated sequence]

A 9-window full screen montage of individual team members from our shortlisted teams appears. Each team member is waving at us.

Norman:

It's so great to have you all with us! Right, let's get comfortable.

[Audio]

Norman clicks his fingers.

When Norman clicks his fingers, he instantly changes from his tuxedo and bow tie into the Shell Eco-marathon shirt he was wearing when we first saw him watching TV at the start. He also reaches for a tub of popcorn to enjoy during the show.

Norman:

Ah, much better! Get the snacks ready and let's get on with the show, as we learn more about our first nominee.

DROP TEAM, BRAZIL

Various team members:

We noticed that many people were socially vulnerable and Drop Team needed to do something to help those in difficult situations. We worked on several fronts and one of the main ones we worked on was cutting plates and printing brackets to make face masks. We also worked with a Covid-19 awareness campaign on the correct way to wear face masks, the importance of washing your hands and the importance of staying at home. We also set up a crowdfunding campaign where the money collected will be used to buy food and hygiene products for those in need. We learnt how important it is to exercise empathy and compassion in such a delicate and complicated time. We have a very important goal, which is to make this world a much more sustainable place, and that's the role of Drop Team! This is our team chant... To the top and forward... Drop Team!

[Animated sequence]

A full frame graphic wipes onto the screen to indicate that this was a shortlisted team from the Americas.

TEAM APATTE 62, INDONESIA

Various team members:

Before the pandemic, we had several teams visiting our workshop and they asked us to assist on their manufacturing process and we were very delighted to help them. Also, when the pandemic first hit our country, we came up with an idea to contribute to prevent the virus' transmission by creating a disinfection robot that can sterilise the surroundings using UV light. We are still working on this UV robot so it can be mass produced and could be used to prevent further spread in our country of Indonesia. We've learned how important it is in a team to have ambition together and motivate each other towards that ambition in every situation. We learned that, whenever you're facing a problem, you can find a way to contribute by finding the solution. This is our team chant... Apatte 62 the champions.

[Animated sequence]

A full frame graphic wipes onto the screen to indicate that this was a shortlisted team from Asia.

Norman:

Thanks Team Apatte 62. I need to give you my rendition of that chant!

[Audio]

Norman's mobile phone rings.

Norman picks up his phone and answers it. We cannot hear what the caller is saying, but Norman can.

Norman:

Oh, it's the producers. No time for the chant? You're missing out, guys! Alright! Well... We’re now being joined by my colleague, Carlos Maurer, representing the jury of Asia.

Carlos, please tell us why did Team Apatte 62 make the shortlist?

TEAM TIM UPS INSA, FRANCE

Various team members:

Since many years we tried to help teams off-track by answering questions about the design or technical issues and on-track with teams in difficulty during the race or in need of materials. We are developing an open source electric prototype using basic tools, materials and open source software and most of all it's buildable by everyone. The goal of this vehicle is to give a safe starting point to any team wishing to enter the Shell Eco-marathon, anywhere in the world. We feel very proud about it, helping teams and transmitting our experience was always part of our DNA. We really hope to see the open source prototype on the circuit one day. It really showed us how a close knit and competitive team could also be supportive to others and help them through their construction of their cars. Thank you, Shell Eco-marathon.

[Animated sequence]

Tommaso:

Hi Norman. We all know the results on the track are important and Oliver Rowland, who

I know is watching, has had his best season yet in Formula E. But it's also about team spirit, resilience, creativity and innovative thinking. So many Shell Eco-marathon teams have demonstrated how, by working together, they can achieve very special and life-changing results. In fact, this years' nominations have been so strong that we'll be making a Special Commendation later in the show. Now though, I can't wait to hear more of the nominees’ stories. Back to you, Norman.

[Split screen footage]

We see Norman (left of screen] and Tommaso Volpe [right of screen]. Norman appears full screen when Tommaso ends his message.

TEAM KIRI FAN, ARGENTINA

Various team members:

When the pandemic started and after a few days in quarantine we realised there was a lack of face shields for health employees here in Argentina. We managed to link our team with different organisations such as Volkswagen Argentina, the government and our university, to plan the manufacturing of one thousand face shields with totally donated materials. This project also encouraged other members of our university to build their own 3D printed face shields. We managed to provide them the materials they needed so that all in all we could deliver about one thousand four hundred masks to different locations in our country. This pandemic showed us that as a team we can achieve many things. We realise that we can help others. That we are not just a team of students, of engineers, that are competing in a competition but we are more. Thank you so much, Shell Eco-marathon.

[Animated sequence]

SEMERU TEAM, INDONESIA

Various team members:

Semeru Team wanted to help because we want to give something back. That's why we use our skill, our experience and knowledge to create the MOLIS, an electric car to transport pedestrians in our university. In response to the Covid-19 pandemic we used our 3D printers to create face shields to give to health workers to fight Covid-19. We are very proud of Semeru Team and what we have achieved. There are many things to improve to ensure consistency with our performance and research development because we also set several long term goals for our team. As a team we learned to keep trying. This is our team song...

TEAM UNILAG, NIGERIA

Various team members:

We established a SEM UNILAG Hub, an online community of energy efficient enthusiasts among Nigerian youth. We brought the conversation home via the virtual learning sessions for SEM. We played discussions by team members and live sessions with local and international industry experts. We also designed a portable solar generator for Nigerian households. Having actual Nigerian households be a part of our research for the solar generator and seeing them respond positively to our design has brought us closer to the potential impact of our solutions. We look forward to finding other ways to bring home all we learn from being a part of Shell Eco-marathon. We have realised that any team of determined individuals can make progress and drive remarkable change, no matter how insurmountable the obstacles may seem. Team UNILAG is a training ground for makers of the future thanks to Shell Eco-marathon. This is our team's motto... We will face our challenges, solve our problems and find our way.

TEAM TAQ BALAM, GUATEMALA

Various team members:

Even though we were in quarantine we were able to positively impact the lives of our fellow countrymen with our work and effort. We have contributed through technical knowledge and social leadership. First, the bio-ethanol that once was used as fuel for our vehicle was transformed into hand sanitiser and was donated to a nursing home. Also, we have held weekly conferences via Zoom with over 150 participants to continue sharing our project. Some team members contributed to the university effort of creating a human mechanical ventilator. Finally, other members were involved in our campaign of fundraising to help students that were affected economically during the pandemic. If Taq Balam has proven something in the past, it's that if there is a challenge, there's a solution. We have learnt that as a multi-disciplinary team we can use our technical knowledge, our creativity and our spirit of innovation that we have developed through the construction and optimisation of our prototype vehicle to generate a positive impact in our country. It is a pleasure for us to introduce you our team song... I hear a roar over here, I hear Taq Balam. I want to know who is going to win? Guatemala! Taq Balam!

ITS TEAM SAPUANGUIN, INDONESIA

Various team members:

We may not have been able to race on the race track but we took the opportunity to put our energy to help overcoming the pandemic starting from our city, with our supervisor we made a project for designing and producing the low cost ventilators which was highly needed by Covid-19 hospitals in our city. We also distributed face shields to the public while educating them on the importance of wearing the face shield during the pandemic. We designed an air sterilisation system for public transportation like for example a city bus. And we also designed an air sterilisation system in air-conditioner by utilising UV rays to kill the virus in enclosed space. We are proud that we could prove ourselves that we are more than just a car research team. We learned how to maintain communication within our team despite being physically limited and we learned to build trust among our members and confidence to compete with the other teams. This is our team chant... Sapuangin! The Champions!

We decided to nominate Eco-Runner Team Delft for the Shell Eco-marathon Spirit Award, they showed us how to work as a team and for us they represent the Shell Eco-marathon spirit itself because they decided to help us as a new team and we worked together from different sides of the world for a better future.

Eco-Runner Team Delft:

KON Team from Lima has just started their student team and we have helped them from the beginning. They want to join the Shell Eco-marathon in 2021. We are really proud of the collaboration with KON Team, what started as a small collaboration only with a few video calls a week, has ended into a professional advisory board which works very effective. We have students from operations departments to engineering departments and KON Team has already made us proud with starting the design of their vehicle. We wanted to help KON Team because they inspired us with their drive and enthusiasm, we saw their motivation and actually recognised our own drive in their actions.

KON Team:

KON Team wants to say to Eco-Runner Team Delft good luck!

Eco-Runner Team Delft:

And we from Eco-Runner Team Delft would like to thank KON Team for the nomination of the Spirit of Shell Eco-marathon award.
