Charles Leclerc, Scuderia Ferrari Driver has been passionate about racing from a young age, starting out racing karts at just five years old.

By the time he was 16, Charles had achieved numerous driving accolades - GP3 and Formula 2 Champion aged 20. This success led him to his dream of racing Formula 1 cars for Scuderia Ferrari becoming the second youngest driver to qualify on pole position in the 2019 Bahrain GP.

In 2020, Charles made a special appearance in the Asia Off-Track Awards to congratulate the winning teams for their brilliant achievements and contribution to Shell Eco-marathon.

Norman Koch, General Manager of Shell Eco-marathon, and host of the Virtual Off-Track Awards Ceremony, caught up with Charles after the show to talk about his passion for racing, advice for Shell Eco-marathon students starting out in the automotive space and what keeps him motivated through challenging times.

A conversation with Charles Leclerc
On Shell Eco-marathon, racing and staying motivated

The Shell pecten appears top centre and a grey line and with a car to the top left appears. Beneath this is a turquoise coloured line and light blue at the bottom. They move gently as the type is revealed in the middle of the screen.

A box appears in the centre of the screen with Norman Koch via video conference within. The vision surrounding the box is of gently coloured blocks and shapes.

[Text displays]
NORMAN KOCK
GLOBAL GENERAL MANAGER SHELL ECO MARATHON

[Audio]
Music plays gently through out.

Norman Koch is intercut the reveal of text over the yellow striped image we saw at the start of the film. This resolves with text appearing at the centre.

Norman:
Hello everyone and welcome Scuderia Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was our special guest at the shell Eco-Marathon Asia off track awards ceremony.

#ShellEcoMarathon

The stripes wipe off upwards revealing a still image of Charles Leclerc in a box with the background of boxes behind. Followed by an image of Charles Leclerc talking to Norman Kock in square boxes side by side with the same pattern of coloured blocks behind. The stripes we saw at the start of the film wipe upwards to reveal Norman Koch again.

Norman:
You loved seeing him so much That we wanted to find out more about him and his experience as a formula one driver.
We see an image of Charles Leclerc leaning against a Red toolbox in his Ferrari cap and racing outfit. Followed by an image of his car on the track the number 16 and the shell pecten visible as it takes a corner. We cut back to the image of Norman in the centre.

Norman:
So he is back to answer our questions.

[Audio]
The music rises louder.

We see a door with the Ferrari logo on it open at high speed revealing a red formula one car with the number 16 on the front. It is in the Ferrari pits. It cuts to the same car driving past the camera at speed as the camera pans from left to right following the high speed car. We then see the car taking a series of bends from the front. It’s tyres touching the edge of the lane. We then see it speed away from us through a series of bends as the camera rises up revealing the race track and the stands in the distance before seeing the car coming towards us at speed with heat haze reflections on the tarmac. The Stripes we saw earlier wipe from bottom to top taking this exciting footage away.

Norman:
Charles tell us, as a young driver who was recognised so early in his career do you have some advice for the students taking part in Shell Eco Marathon who are only just starting out in the automotive space.

The wipe reveals Norman Koch in the centre of the screen before cutting to Norman Koch in a square box to the left and Charles Leclerc in a box to the right. Charles is stood in front of a yellow and white checker board with the Shell pecten in the yellow checks.

Charles:
Well I think first of all the most important is to have fun.

[Video Footage}
We cut to Charles in a 16:9 box in the centre of the image with the coloured boxes around him. He is wearing a white, racing, shirt with a shell pecten on the left chest.

CHARLES LECLERC
SCUDERIA FERRARI FORMULA 1 DRIVER

Charles:
Also, for me, Formula one, this is the main target. Whenever you have fun you perform at your best so have fun and enjoy.

We see the Ferrari car speeding around the track some more. Heading down the track and then heading around a tight bend. We then reveal Norman in the central box.

Norman:
Shell Eco-Marathon is all about energy optimisation. Teams use design techniques to build ultra-energy efficient cars and develop driving strategies to conserve energy on track. What difference can you make as a driver in managing fuel economy during a formula one race?

The two boxes appear again with Norman on the left and Charles on the right. This then returns to a single box with Charles in the centre. Inter cut with the formula one car speeding around bends, and chicanes. The background is blurred by the speed of the car. We cut to a still of a tyre being changed followed by a shot of the car speeding around a corner over the redd and white marks of the edge of the track.

Charles:
Well this is actually a quite tricky question. It depends on the tracks but there are corners in which its more efficient to save fuel with losing the least time possible. Here I would say it is probably the high speed because you are, on the one side you are saving some fuel but you are also saving the tyres which is good so we always try to combine a bit both. But yeah in general it’s a fine tuning you are normally trying as a driver during pre-practice.

From the shot of Charles in a rectangular box the screen wipe to reveal Norman in the same rectangular box.

Norman:
Building an energy efficient car is only half the journey for student teams. They must also pass technical inspection in order to compete on track, which can be daunting. As part of the innovation partnership with Scuderia Ferrari, Shell must ensure that the fuel formulation complies with FIA regulations. How does Shell support you with this in Formula One races?

We reveal the two boxes side by side with Norman on the left and Charles on the right. This then cuts to Charles in a rectangular box centred.

Charles:
The trackside analysts receive over 40 samples over a race weekend to ensure that the formulations are FIA compliant and the oil analysis is a bit like a health check for a formula one car.

We see the car enter the pits. Ferrari pit crew surround the car in red boiler suits and helmets. All Red with the Shell pecten on the back. We begin with the shot from the front then the side and then over head as the pit crew run in to change tyres, check the oil. The car then drives off and we cut to Charles in the 16:9 box.

Norman:
Charles winning in Formula One is all about teamwork. Can you tell us how it feels to drive for one of the most iconic teams in the world.

Charles:
It feels unbelievable to drive for Ferrari, I mean, Formula One has always been my dream since I was a child and even more for Ferrari so it feels great but you have to understand once you are working with such a team how they manage to have so much success in the sport.

We cut from Charles to several images of the car both in the pits and on the track ending with a still image of Charles with several golden trophies behind him as he shakes his fist to the camera with a red face mask on as well as his Ferrari drivers suit and a black Ferrari baseball cap.

Charles:
Every detail is analysed and that’s great to see. I have grown a lot as a driver but also as a person since I arrived in Scuderi Ferrari.

The strips wipe from top to bottom revealing Norman in his 16:9 box in the centre of the screen.

Norman:
A significant number of the participants in this years Shell Eco-Marathon program have faced disruptions because of the corona virus pandemic. How have you stayed positive and motivated through these challenging times on and off-the track?

The image of Norman cuts to a square on the left of the screen with Charles in a square box to the right. The image of 3D blocks of colour behind. Then we cut to Charles in a rectangular box in the centre of the screen. This cuts to stills shots of the Ferrari on a race track then to back Charles in a rectangular box in the centre of the screen still with the coloured block behind.

Charles:
Yes well it has been very challenging, also for us drivers because we couldn’t test our cars. We haven’t tested since the official Barcelona testing which was back at the, earlier in the year. So it was very difficult to start again. But during the lockdown I basically stayed on my simulator most of the time to try and train as much as possible to be fit once everything restarted.

The sliding, coloured lines rise too wipe Charles from the frame the wipe upwards to reveal Norman in a box over the coloured blocks.

Norman:
Charles can you tell us, what and who inspired you to get into motor racing.

The image of Norman cuts to a square on the left of the screen with Charles in a square box to the right. The image of 3D blocks of colour behind. Then we cut to Charles in a rectangular box in the centre of the screen with the coloured block behind.

Charles:
My father was a racing driver back in the day, so Obviously when I’ve known that racing was, interested me quite a bit and even more living in Monaco there’s the formula one grand prix there and watching it every year made me want to try racing. And as soon as I tried it for the first time I fell in love with the sport.

The sliding, coloured lines rise too wipe Charles from the frame the wipe upwards to reveal Norman in a box over the coloured blocks.

Norman:
And finally, how do you cope under pressure or when faced with challenges?

The image of Norman cuts to a square on the left of the screen with Charles in a square box to the right. The image of 3D blocks of colour behind. Then we cut to Charles in a rectangular box in the centre of the screen with the coloured block behind.

Charles:
Formula one is a very pressurised sport and ambient in general so you need to be performing at your best under pressure. I’ve done quite a bit of mental training once I was younger to be able to perform at my best whenever there was pressure which seems like an easy thing when it’s said it’s not that easy once, you need to do it under the real pressure there is from the media, from the fans, from absolutely everyone in the paddock.

We see Charles putting on a helmet over his head. He wears a white balaclava. Then it cuts to him climbing into the car then driving it out of the paddock with a member of the pit crew in a red boiler suit indicating for him to turn left. Then to a shot of the car driving through shot from left to right with pit crew watching by seven red chairs. Then to a wider shot from inside a paddock as the car continues left to right across the frame as the camera drifts slowly downwards.

Charles:
So it is a difficult exercise but every time I get in the car I am trying to put myself a bit in my zone trying to extract every external thoughts that I have and focus on what has to be done in the car.

The sliding, coloured lines rise too wipe Charles from the frame the wipe upwards to reveal Norman in a box over the coloured blocks.

Norman:
Thanks so much for joining us Charles and its great to see you back on the track and best of luck for the rest of the season. Goodbye.

The images cuts to the animated coloured blocks in pale yellow, blue, grey and white. There are three dimensional shapes that rise and fall slowly. Like waves of geometric and circular shapes rising and falling. In the centre is the Shell pecten with text beneath and in the top right the Ferrari logo of a black dancing horse on a yellow shield with text beneath.

[Audio]
The Shell music ident plays.
