Sponsored by Altair, the Vehicle Design Award (Urban Concept) recognises innovative design research and execution, awarding the most original and coherent vehicle in terms of aesthetics, ergonomics, technical feasibility, choice of materials and eco-friendliness.
The Eco-Runner Team Delft’s two previous Vehicle Design Awards had come in the Prototype category, but in 2020 the team made the challenging decision to compete in the Urban Concept category.
The Urban Concept category features much larger vehicles than those Eco-Runner Team Delft had previously designed; and offered the opportunity to build an efficient hydrogen-powered vehicle that is closer to a modern city car and a step closer to sustainable mobility.
Meeting the challenge head-on, the team employed a very disciplined and highly motivated approach to the final design and production of the Eco-Runner X. This included using an in-wheel electromotor which converts electrical energy into kinetic energy to propel the vehicle. Thanks to this careful planning and meticulous execution, the Eco-Runner X successfully secured the 2020 Urban Concept Award.
